Hi, I noticed you were in Beijing for some time. I was wondering if you could fill me in on some info about the martial arts school here (specifically in the Chaoyang Dist).

Thanks!

Yeah there's no way around relocalization, especially for a martial arts school, for all the reasons Tabby Cat states. Maybe that's not a bad thing, cos it could hopefully remind the students that they are part of a community and help guide the training away from instilling antisocial behaviour. If I were to teach I'd run it more like a collective of like-minded people who all know slightly different stuff and more or less split the cost of the training space, rather than as a school with a teacher who teaches and students who learn. That's partly because I doubt I'll ever be good enough to teach, but mainly it's because I'd hate to start teaching and stop learning / training. Also I think a "collective" would be a good platform for building much more than martial skill - it could become a loose-knit community, which comes back to the concept of relocalisation.

This sounds like just about the perfect afternoon/evening to me, Emlyn. I used to take 15-20 mile rambles through the Berkshire countryside when I lived there, more on ancient market paths than old Roman roads, but spending a couple of pints reading the Times and playing with martial movement during the walk . . . . that I remember fondly.

Cheers.

Steve, you would do better to go to the various martial arts shops near the west gate of Beijing Sports University. I can't remember the name of the shop in the photos here, but if you really want to get there, take the 331 bus from Jishuitan or Wudaokou to the end of its route, and walk in the direction of the Fragrant Hills Park.

Hi!
Do you remember the name of the store? I am going to Beijing in April and would love to visit. I see punching bags, is there other equipment? (pads, focus targets, gloves...)

Hi Peter,

Yes, that's an old favourite! My ex-girlfriend's six-year-old boy used to enjoy watching it as well; with any luck it's planted a seed for the future... I also like "Fight like the Matrix"...
